Small Groups

All of our Small Groups strive to incorporate four things into their time together:

  • Fellowship
  • Prayer
  • Bible Study
  • Outreach

Groups usually number from 8-12 people and are all unique to the people in them. But in all cases, groups support and pray for each other through many of life’s ups and downs: birth of a new baby, a painful divorce, the death of a spouse, tough economic times, celebration of a new job, or whatever else members are going through.

In January and February of 2000, Pastor Sandy ran a six-week training session to train leaders for Small Groups. Attending that training were David Glick, Paula Glick, Mark & Jennifer Haskell and Judy Matchett. The Lenten potlucks that year featured mini Small Groups as the program. Many of those attending decided to continue as part of a Small Group and three Small Groups were formed Glicks, Haskells and Matchetts. (Glicks have moved away, but the other two groups continue meeting yet!)

Other groups were formed over the years: some broke off from existing groups; others were helped to get started by an existing group; while some came about as a result of the 40 Days of Purpose event at our church in the fall of 2007 or the Living Outside The Box study that all groups did in 2008.

The people in our Small Groups are as varied as the people who make up our congregation. While we have some mixed groups, we also have a Women’s Bible Study, a Snowbird group, a Young Adult Group, a Parenting Group, and a 1st Place 4 Health Group that does Yoga as part of their program! Other activity-based small groups are forming, such as The Good Wood Woodworking Group.

Here are some heartfelt responses to the question, “What does a Small Group mean to me?”

I have been part of a Small Group for the last three years. Even though I was uncomfortable about what to expect at first, it was the best thing I could have done! I not only became good friends with each member, but I am a stronger Christian with the love and support from each member of our group. We pray for each other and are concerned about each other on a daily basis. Every Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. you will find me at Small Group with my Christian family, anxious to learn and share with my Christian friends. – Linda Sisson

We currently have 9 adults and 8 ½ children in our Small Group and have been together for 2 ½ years. For me our Small Group has been a group of fellow Christians that have become good friends. I know that we all have the same goal and that is to live our life in the footsteps of Jesus. It is a different kind of friendship when God is in the center of it, and I had never experienced that until I joined our Small Group. Not only do I look forward to our Small Group, but so do my boys. I feel so blessed to have our Small Group in my life. – Melissa West

We have learned so much together and really enjoy the relaxed setting and feeling comfortable having things we might not understand explained to us. We refer to our Wednesday night Small Group meeting as ourSpiritual Date Night. We encourage you to give it a try, like we did! – Tom/Diane Thompson

I discovered the heartfelt trust of Christian fellowship, the deep understanding of God’s unfailing love for me, a thirst for knowing more about the Bible, an intense desire to include the Lord in all parts of my life, and the will to show others the joy of working alongside Jesus Christ. Don’t miss the ride of your life. Small groups has touched me at the very core of my life! – John West

We continue to celebrate our existing Small Groups while trying to accomplish Pastor Sandy’s dream of having First Presbyterian be not a church with Small Groups, but rather a church made up of Small Groups.

If you feel called to join or to lead a Small Group, please contact one of the Small Group coordinators. There is a place for you in this Ministry!
